Uniform Policy

School uniforms must be worn at all times. Uniforms are meant to stress the fundamental equality of all students and to remove clothing-related distractions. Uniform checks take place by an administrator at arrival and by the office staff for late-arriving students.

If a student arrives without all components of the correct uniform, families will receive a phone call and/or reminder note to be sent home.

A student who has an egregious uniform violation – non-uniform shirt or pants (jeans, colorful tights) – will not be permitted to go to class until the correct uniform has arrived. Students who are in unsafe shoes (open-toe) may attend class but may not participate in recess/PE given the safety issue.
Uniform Components:
  • ShirtShirts must be polo shirts in white, green, black or grey.
  • Pants: Standard khaki pants may be worn. Pants may be either zipper or pull-on. The pants need to fit correctly (no baggy style).
  • Belt:    If you choose to wear a belt, it must be solid black or grey in color. Please make sure your child can easily take on and off the belt without assistance.
  • Shoes: As students need to be safe at recess and PE, students should wear close-toed sneakers/tennis shoes daily. Boots with heels, sandals, moccasins, clogs, and bowling shoes are not permitted.
  • Socks and/or Tights: Solid neutral-colored (black, white, grey, brown, etc.) socks or tights may be worn.
  • Jumper: Girls may wear khaki jumpers. A polo must be worn underneath the jumper. Girls should wear tights or shorts underneath the jumper. Jumpers are permitted in kindergarten – 2nd grade only.
  • Skirts: Girls may wear khaki skirts (with tights or shorts underneath) or skorts to school.
Optional:
  • Sweater: Solid (may not have patterns or writing on it) color black, white, green, or grey sweaters. Uniform shirt must be worn underneath.
  • Fleece: Solid (may not have patterns or writing on it) color black, white, green, or grey sweaters. Uniform shirt must be worn underneath.
  • Jackets and Coats: Jackets or coats may be worn to school, but are not permitted to be worn in the classroom (no exceptions).
The only outerwear students are permitted to wear in class is a fleece, sweatshirt or sweater in white, green or grey.
Other Accessories:
  • Hair / Head Accessories: Students may wear hair accessories such as headbands, beads or barrettes of any kind or color, religious head coverings.  Note that students will be asked to remove hair pieces if they are large or elaborate such that they could prevent a child from seeing the board. Hats are not permitted.
  • Make-up: Make up is not allowed to be worn or brought to school as it is a distraction to the learning environment for elementary school students. Exceptions to this are non-tinted chap-stick and nail polish.
  • Jewelry:  As they quickly become distractions and can be easily lost, damaged or taken, we strongly discourage students from wearing jewelry to school. The school cannot take responsibility for jewelry or other accessories that students may bring to school.
    • For safety reasons, earrings may not be more than ½  of an inch long
    • Bracelets that prevent the child from writing or that make noise (ex: multiple dangling bracelets) are not permitted.
    • Necklaces may be worn but should be worn under the shirt during instructional time.
      • If a child’s jewelry is a distraction to his or her learning (e.g. a student continually plays with a watch, or takes bracelets on and off) it will be taken and stored by the teacher until the end of the school day.
