Who We Are

Capitol Collegiate is proud to serve a diverse student population of 500 students. As CCA was founded to serve traditionally underserved communities, that is reflected in the students served. Close to 90% of our student body are socioeconomically disadvantaged.  More than half of the students enrolled are Latino-Hispanic, and close to one third are African American, both traditionally underserved groups.  Fundamental to the school’s mission is that learners of all backgrounds, needs, and abilities can be successful. To that end, nearly 10% of the school’s population are students with disabilities.

Students

I’ve seen how the school has evolved and how it is still improving. We have created a second family here at CCA, where we can trust and learn from one another. The teachers and staff have supported us and helped us reach our goals. CCA teachers do that by having clear lesson plans and thoroughly explaining the topics to us. The staff members also make an effort to know all of the students by name. They closely work with families to ensure the success of students.

CCA has prepared me for high school because the teacher provide one on one help to excel in subjects such as math, reading and writing. They have also  taught me  the importance of responsibility through programs such as the Garden Club, Student Leadership Council, the school newspaper, Girls on the Run, and through being the Teachers Assistant in the Book Club. They also have taught us the importance of responsibility by setting high standards for the students. They set high expectations because they want to push us and motivate us to give it our all.

At CCA teachers always went out of their way to make sure every student understood the content we were learning. My math teachers would listen to me explain how I solved my math problems even if it was different than the way they solved them. We were encouraged even if we processed things differently and teachers accepted my different ways of thinking. CCA prepared me for high school by teaching me to take notes how to study for tests. It helped me learn how to solve problems and gave me many skills that I will use for the rest of my life. Capitol Collegiate has also helped prepare me to apply for and get accepted into the college I want to attend.

Families

I came to visit Capitol Collegiate when my daughter was in 1st grade at another school in the neighborhood. I saw Kindergarten students learning things that my daughter was learning in 1st grade and I was so impressed. I brought her to Capitol Collegiate and she is now scoring proficient and advanced on the SBAC.

I admire the school’s innovative instructional methods that are designed to embrace my child’s attributes and strengths, and allow him to shine uniquely and independently. I also respect their standards and policies that give him the structure and the guidelines that he needs to achieve his academic goals, develop accountability and aspire to limitless greatness.

Teachers & Staff

When I first started my career in education at CCA, I had recently graduated college with a degree in education. I began working as a team teacher for first grade. In my second year at CCA there was an opportunity to be promoted to a  lead teacher position. Starting as a team teacher helped me to gain skills and knowledge about classroom management and solidified my decision to pursue teaching as a career. Working at CCA has advanced not only my career, but my teaching experience.
Caira Winn, Kindergarten Teacher
CCA offers a new approach to students who are not achieving in reading and math. We emphasize that every minute matters and we don’t waste any time. We don’t waste instructional minutes or time walking in from recess. We are preparing our students for college by giving them a realistic picture of what is expected of them in life. We set routines and have high expectations. Our students know what it means to work hard and I know they will go on to make our community and our society better.
Julio “Mr. D” Duarte, Facilities Assistant
I grew up in this community, right down the street. I have always wanted to come back to my community and serve. I love working here because the kids want to learn and I want to do my part in giving them a passion for learning.
